At Aleris Tromsø, we have extensive experience with sleep problems. We accept patients with all types of sleep disorders for examination, and offer treatment for all the most common sleep disorders. Most of us have experienced a bad night, or three, this is considered normal.
It is only when the sleep problems persist over weeks, months and years, and affect the quality of life, mood, level of functioning, work and the family, that it is a sleep disorder that needs further investigation and treatment. Sleep disorders are common in the population – around a third of the population complains of poor sleep at times. The most common sleep disorder is insomnia. Those with insomnia have problems falling asleep or staying asleep. Approx. 20% of the population suffers from this condition. Another common sleep disorder is sleep apnea. 8-16% of the population has this condition, which is characterized by loud snoring, increased daytime fatigue and breathing pauses during sleep. In addition to this, there are several other sleep disorders that are somewhat less common in the population, you can find more information about many of them on these pages. Many patients have several sleep disorders at the same time, which means that it is important to have a thorough examination before starting treatment. Some also have other illnesses that affect sleep quality, such as various pain conditions, depression or anxiety disorders.
Sleep investigation and treatment can therefore be quite complicated, but with good competence and a good team, you can map and treat the vast majority of sleep disorders in a good way. After you have contacted us, you will be sent a sleep assessment form and a sleep diary to be filled in over a week before you attend a sleep assessment appointment with our doctor with special expertise in sleep disorders. At the assessment session, it is assessed which sleep disorder(s) you have and treatment is then usually started. Some patients will also need further examination by a neurologist or ear-nose-throat specialist at Aleris before treatment can be started - this depends on the type of sleep disorder you have. Some patients also need to undergo a sleep recording with respiratory polygraphy. You will then bring equipment that you will sleep with for one night, which you will return the following day. The need for such an examination will be assessed at your examination class.
